Hand made inground raised planting bed made from cedar. Multiple sizes available, but the two sizes I sell the most are the 11 in tall variants. All sizes are available with a top rail, please check the appropriate variant. Should you be interested in other custom sizes, please contact us for a quote.
Material Used
The cedar is rough on both sides with milling marks on them, the thickness of the wood is approx 0.52 in. All cedar has color variations and we do try to make the boards match each other as well as possible. Corners have 2x2 in cedar stock cut to size on the inside for increased strength and durability. All corners are screwed, glued and wrapped with more cedar to add bracing and protect the end grain of the side boards from absorbing moisture. Corners are always the weak points of a wooden planting bed and we try to make ours strong and last many, many years.
Other Materials
We also offer inground beds made from cedar 2x material. You can find them here. These beds are stronger, sturdier and can be built larger/taller than standard beds.
Wood Care:
Cedar is rot resistant but that does not make it rot proof. Any wood exposed to the outside will be impacted and start deteriorating litle-by-little from day one. That is doubly true for the parts that are in ground contact year-in and year-out.
The beds come by default as unfinished, natural cedar. To get the maximum lifespan out of the beds, we strongly suggest to either buy finished beds or finish them yourself.
Order a Pre-finished Box - We use Outdoor Defense Oil (clear/amber tint) which is a Tung Oil based finish by RMPCo. Finished boxes have the finishing fee already added to their sales price. The finish is applied to all parts prior to assembly, adding maximum protection to your new raised bed. Ordering a finished box adds 1 - 2 days to the pick-up or delivery timeframe to allow the parts adequate time to cure before being put together.
Tip: If you are buying multiple boxes, it is much less expensive to purchase the finish and apply it yourself. Reach out to Farmer Vic for advice on how much finish you need. Finishes are in stock can be added to your pick-up or delivered along with the boxes or shipped separately directly from the factory. You can also purchase your own finishes or paints and use them - please read Farmer Vic's blog post for additional information.
