This bundle is your choice if you aim to use Dark Tung Oil as your finish. It includes Citrus Solvent to remove prior finishes and removing or has contamination that needs cleaning. The Citrus Solvent is also used to thin the Tung Oil which is often too thick to penetrate easily. A 1:1 ratio works best for all wood types and will ensure your finish penetrates the wood much more easily. It also allows for creating smaller batches of finish only in the quantities you need.
Contents:
- Real Milk Paint Co. All Natural Tung Oil
- Real Milk Paint Co. Wood Wax
- Our favorite abrasive - one sheet each of 80/120/180/220 grit Backside Sandpaper
- Real Milk Paint Co. Orange Oil Natural Citrus Solvent
How much finish product do you need?
Initially mix a small amount of Tung Oil and Citrus Solvent at a 1:1 ratio. You will need at least 2 or 3 layers and the finish needs to absorb after each application, so mixing your finish in an old glass container that has a screw-on lid is what we suggest. Farmer Vic uses old jam glass containers and just marks them with a sharpie. Don't mix too much initially, you will be surprised how much wood you can cover with small amounts and you can always just add to the existing mix!
Pro tip: if you are unsure of how dark you want your finish to be, just purchase an extra sampler size of the Natural Tung Oil - you can use that to thin out the color a bit. This is all oil, a little can go a long way and the sampler is large enough for you to experiemnt a bit.
If you have more than 2 boards, or other additional wood items you want to maintain, or your boards are rather large and possibly extraordinarily dry, you might want to choose larger size tin of Wood Wax to make sure you have enough for future maintenance and touch-ups.
Sanding Suggestions
As far as your sanding options go - Backside Sandpaper is meant for the final touch, such as hand sanding of curves, contours and shapes and to get that perfectly smooth surface in the end.
This bundle includes a set of one sheet each of 80/120/180/220 grit sandpaper.
Heavy Sanding - Use an electric Sander first
If your boards have heavy scratches and cuts, you should first use an electric sander with appropriate grits to sand out the majority of the scratches and cuts. Then you can start using Backside Sandpaper to get the board just perfect. Backside Sandpaper lasts much longer than other sandpaper and a single pack can easily cover your finish hand sanding needs for more than one item (depending on it's size). It never hurts to order more than one though!
